Renovation milestone reached in Health Sciences Building
A major phase of Health Sciences Building renovations is nearing completion, providing purpose-designed spaces for new rehabilitation science programs while advancing a broader, multi-phase effort to support evolving needs throughout the building.
Several projects included in the first stage of Health Sciences Building renovations are nearing completion, marking an important milestone in preparations for the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) and the Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) programs. Beginning Aug. 27, 2026, several newly renovated spaces are expected to become available for use, providing new teaching, learning, study, and support spaces for students, faculty, and staff. The milestone follows several months of renovation activity within the building.
The renovations are part of the broader Making the Most of our Health Sciences Building space optimization project. The first stage of work included renovations to approximately 1,757 square metres of space across B-Wing and E-Wing. While this milestone directly supports occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) activities, the broader project includes work addressing teaching, learning, research, student support, accessibility and shared-space needs across the Health Sciences Building.
New teaching and learning spaces
Dedicated teaching and learning spaces have been developed on the first floor of B-Wing to support the distinct curriculum requirements of the MOT and MSLP programs. These spaces include specialized equipment, breakout rooms, and teaching support spaces for the SRS.
Additional spaces on the third floor of E-Wing include a dedicated classroom and computer lab designed to support MSLP students using specialized equipment and devices, as well as a new audiology suite and associated collaboration spaces.
Student-focused improvements
Several renovations were designed to support student learning, study, and collaboration within SRS.
Improvements include an updated SRS administration area designed to better support students, along with a new student work and study room where students can gather, collaborate, and work between classes. The renovated area also includes meeting and other workspaces for faculty and staff activities.
Accessibility and inclusion enhancements
Several accessibility-focused upgrades have also been completed on the third floor of E-Wing.
These additions include a companion-care, barrier-free washroom equipped with an overhead lift and adult change table, as well as a new inclusive student change and locker room featuring private change spaces and secure lockers. These facilities are intended to support a wider range of accessibility and privacy needs within SRS.
Looking ahead
Work remains underway on additional components of the space optimization project, including further work into 2027. Additional project phases will continue as spaces are renovated and prepared to support teaching, learning, research, and collaboration throughout the building.
Updates will continue to be shared through the Making the Most of our Health Sciences Building webpage as further milestones are reached and details about upcoming work are confirmed.
