USask Food for Thought Planetary Health Series event wins gold medal

A collaboration between the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Health Sciences and the College of Education received top honours from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE).

The USask Health Sciences and College of Education were awarded a Prix D’Excellence Gold Medal for Best Community Outreach Initiative in recognition of a Food for Thought Planetary Health Series event.

The Food for Thought series addressed the challenges of tackling global food security while acknowledging the delicate interdependencies of human civilization and the natural world.

On Dec. 6, 2019, the Health Sciences partnered with the College of Education to host a free screening of the documentary Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story to a capacity audience of 500—mainly comprised of middle years students and their teachers. The collaboration was developed with the goal of increasing community engagement while driving meaningful change across campus and beyond.

Following the screening, USask hosted a forum for students to build community food waste action campaigns. Due to the popularity of the event, a repeat viewing was held Jan. 31, 2020.
