New interim associate provost, health, named at University of Saskatchewan

Health science researcher, Kinesiology professor, and former member of the university senior leadership team Dr. Adam Baxter-Jones (PhD) begins one-year term with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Health Sciences.

Dr. Adam Baxter-Jones (PhD) has been announced as the interim associate provost, health, for the University of Saskatchewan.

Baxter-Jones joined the University of Saskatchewan (USask) faculty in 2000 and has held a number of leadership roles during his time on campus. As a long-standing member of the College of Kinesiology, Baxter-Jones is also an associate member of the College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.

“In addition to his extensive research and teaching record, Adam brings to the position considerable internal administrative experience from his service as the associate dean, graduate education and research and acting dean in the College of Kinesiology, as well as the acting dean, College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies,” said Interim Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Melissa Just (EdD).

A former president of the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine, Dr. Baxter-Jones has spent the past three decades researching children growth, maturation and development  in relation to physical activity, sport, and exercise. Recognition of his work includes the 2015 University of Saskatchewan’s Distinguished Researcher Award and the 2012 Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation Achievement Award.

In addition to membership with the Canadian Institute of Health’s (CIHR) College of Reviewers, Baxter-Jones is also the scientific officer on CIHR’s Social & Developmental Aspects of Children’s and Youth’s Health (CHI) committee. He has worked on the USask Associate Deans Research Forum and the Health Sciences Research Advisory Committee as a member of the Biomedical Imaging & Therapy (BMIT) Beam Team at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) and as a leader of a Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) health research group investigating bone health.

Dr. Baxter-Jones’ one-year term began July 15, 2020.
